NEWS February 09, 2010 SENATE VOTES TO LOWER SALARIES AMID ECONOMIC HARDSHIP JACKSON – Senators voted Thursday to reduce the salaries of lawmakers by 10 percent, an effort to help the state's budget crisis. SB 2506, passed 39 to 2 in the Senate, cuts salaries of representatives, senators, the Speaker of the House and the Lt. Governor. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives. “In these tough economic times the legislature should tighten its belt just as families and businesses all over Mississippi are doing,” said Lt. Governor Phil Bryant. “I believe as a public servant you should lead by example and that is exactly what we did today.” The legislation states the reduction in salary will go into effect Jan. 1, 2011, for legislators and on July 1, 2010, for the Lt. Governor and Speaker of the House. The Mississippi Constitution prohibits a reduction in salary for legislators during the current session.
