LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR BRYANT HOSTS ENERGY SUMMIT

10.21.08 – Mississippi’s diversity in energy production is one of the many topics up for discussion during Lt. Governor Phil Bryant’s Energy Summit. The summit is slated to be held Wednesday, October 22nd beginning at 8:30 AM, Eagle Ridge Conference Center, Hinds Community College, in Raymond.

“Mississippi’s economic viability is dependent on having competitive, affordable and reliable energy sources, and we appreciate Lt. Gov. Bryant for bringing heat and light to this issue,” said Blake Wilson, president of the Mississippi Economic Council. “Mississippi is a leader in energy development, which is evident in the numerous projects and opportunities that are being explored throughout our state. With a sensible, forward-thinking approach to energy policy, we can maintain our place as a leader in economic development.”

The one-day summit hosted by Lt. Governor Bryant, the Mississippi Manufacturers Association and the Mississippi Economic Council will include a variety of presentations. While the Summit will focus primarily on the State’s diversity in energy production, presentations on alternative fuel research and the economic impact of advanced energy sources will also be addressed.

Producing a plan to address energy related issues in the next legislative session is just one of the goals Lt. Governor Bryant intends for the summit to accomplish. “We want to educate businesses and consumers on our state’s natural resources for producing energy,” stated Lt. Governor Bryant. “With the rising energy cost, it is important to discuss how Mississippi can lead the Southeast in increasing our energy supply.”

Jay Moon, president and CEO of Mississippi Manufacturers Association remarked, “Although the cost of energy has dropped in recent weeks, it continues to have a dramatic impact on energy-intensive industries, specifically manufacturing. Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant’s Energy Summit is a positive step toward helping our state’s manufacturers and their employees understand how to better manage these higher costs and continue to be competitive in today’s global economy.”

Invitations to the privately funded Energy Summit have been sent to an assortment of elected officials, including the Public Service Commissioners and the Mississippi Senate, as well as manufacturers, businesses and the members of the State Oil & Gas Board.
