NEWS FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: MICK BULLOCK 601-441-0701 SENATE PASSES 50 PIECES OF LEGISLATION 2.20.08 - In an aggressive move today, the Mississippi State Senate under the direction of Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant took up over 50 pieces of legislation. A move that places the Senate in good standing for an approaching deadline on original floor action.
Many pieces of legislation were education related and are now headed to the House of Representatives for consideration. SB 2405 creates a task force on underperforming schools and school districts while SB 2176 gives a pay raise to teachers with 30 years or more experience. The Senate also took up additional illegal immigration legislation. SB 2984 would strengthen the laws against workers compensation benefits paid directly to an illegal alien. SB 3034 revises the penalty for using a false I.D., transporting illegal aliens, and aiding and abetting those offenses.
“I am proud of what we are accomplishing as well as the fast pace of our work,” stated Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant. “The legislation we have passed today represents a significant portion of the Senate calendar. We are making great progress in doing the people’s business.”
The Mississippi Senate also took up SB 2766, part of Lt. Governor Bryant’s Family and Marriage Summit, which restricts adoptions by same sex couples. About Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant Phil Bryant was sworn-in as Mississippi’s Lieutenant Governor on January 10, 2008 after capturing 59% of the vote in the November election. He started his career in public service as a Hinds County Deputy Sheriff and was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives from District 59 in Rankin County in 1992 and re-elected in 1995. Bryant was appointed State Auditor by the late Governor Kirk Fordice and re-elected overwhelmingly in 1999 and without opposition in 2003. ### |
