SENATE PASSES LEGISLATION AIMED AT PROMOTING HOUSING

2.27.08 - Legislation aimed at helping the Gulf Coast housing market further recover cleared the Mississippi State Senate under the direction of Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant.

After passing the newly established Senate Housing Committee, SB 2981 passed the full Senate Tuesday and provides public/private employers the authority to establish an assisted housing program. This program will allow employers to assist their employees in paying rental security deposits, rent, down payments, closing costs or any other fees or costs associated with the rental or purchase of the home.

“The Senate Housing Committee is to be commended for their efforts in helping the people of the Mississippi Gulf Coast,” stated Lt. Governor Phil Bryant. “SB 2981 helps more Mississippians achieve the dream of home ownership and I will continue to support additional legislation aimed at helping and promoting home ownership.”

The bill, although targeted to helping the Gulf Coast, applies to the whole state. SB 2981 further defines eligibility as well as the form at which the assistance would be provided; repayable loan, forgivable loan or in the form of a grant. The forgiveness structure, amount of assistance and repayment terms would be determined by the employer.

Senate Pro-Tempore and Gulf Coast resident, Billy Hewes commented, “The REACH legislation goes a long way toward addressing housing challenges faced by residents of our coastal community. The provisions in this bill provide incentives for employers across Mississippi to attract and retain a more stable workforce.”
